The 'Egg Story' Lesson Plan

A 50-page color manual has been designed to simplify the educator's task. Crammed with fun hands-on activities and color

photographs of developing embryos it is great for creating students interest and a comprehensive source of information for

the teacher. The perfect companion of a hands-on experience of incubation

"The Egg Story" manual shows how an egg is formed, what its different parts and functions are and how a chick embryo develops

and hatches. It also gives an insight into particular biological topics such as blood circulation, respiration and how bones are different

in birds. Students will develop observation and record keeping skills, make and use measurements. They will acquire biological

Control of incubator humidity is the no.1 cause of confusion and misunderstanding in incubation procedure, frequently resulting in poor hatching rates.

The solution to the problem is Brinsea's new H22 digital humidity management module incubator humidifer.

The module suits most fan-assisted incubators and provides continuous, direct and highly accurate relative humidity (% RH) readout. It also controls the amount of water evaporated within the incubator to maintain the humidity level set by the user.

The new H22 Humidity Management Module now features a digital display which clearly and continuously shows the Relative Humidity (RH) within the incubator, allowing you to both accurately monitor and if necessary adjust the humidity level in forced draught incubators as required, in order to help ensure maximum hatching success.

The Humidity Management Module will compensate for fluctuations in ambient humidity level, day or night, and allows the user complete control over incubation environment.

The unit stands beside the incubator, and is connected to it by a thin electrical lead and a flexible tube for water supply. The sensor mounts through a 25mm (one inch) diameter hole in the incubator wall, pre-cut on all Brinsea forced draft incubators. The H22 is suitable for many incubator brands holding up to about 1000 eggs.

For larger incubators, the H222 provides the same facilities but with a larger pumping capacity, suitable for incubators up to about 10,000 eggs.

When disaster strikes and your developing chicks are threatened by any of the everyday problems listed above, the most important protection is for the breeder to be quickly made aware of the crisis.

If power failure happens in the middle of the night, the damage will have been done before morning, but in most cases action can be taken to protect the eggs, provided the user is alerted.

The Brinsea temperature alarm module offers immediate warning of change in temperature within an incubator. It relies on independent detection of temperature and includes an internal battery backup to allow the alarm to continue to sound in the event of a mains power failure. The high and low temperature limits are adjustable and in most cases the alarm can be set to go off if the temperature varies by 1.0ºF (0.5°C).

The module is available in two versions:

The T100 for fitting to Brinsea Octagon 100 or 250 incubators, only. The T100 has the additional feature of regulating temperature in the case of a failure of the main temperature control which could otherwise lead to uncontrolled temperature rise. In this case the T100 alarm will trigger and the heaters in the Octagon 100 series incubator are switched off. As the temperature then falls below the upper limit the heaters are switched on again and so reasonable temperature control is maintained.

The T20 can be fitted to any incubator or brooder. The T20 can be used to warn of temperature variation in any environment within its operating range of 77 - 104ºF range (25 - 40°C). The T20 simply requires its sensor to be inserted into the enclosure through a hole of about ¼ inch (6mm) diameter.

Both the high and low limits are easily adjustable with screwdriver operated trimmers. The system is flexible and allows the user to set the alarm sound if the temperature deviates by +1.0ºF or -3.0ºF (for example) from any temperature within 77 - 104ºF range.

A 'Silence Alarm' feature allows the sounder to be de-activated for about 10 minutes - useful when opening the incubator to check eggs. The sounder automatically resets after 10 minutes so there is no danger of the sounder being left inoperative by accident.

The internal battery backup allows the alarm to continue warning of a mains failure for several hours. The backup battery is automatically recharged when reconnected to the mains.

The T100 can be retro-fitted to Octagon 100 series incubators and fitting instructions are available.

Wet bulb Thermometer - checking humidity directly
Comparing wet and dry bulb thermometers is the most accurate, low cost method for measuring Relative Humidity. Simple, direct reading hygrometers are available but vary widely in accuracy and are not recommended. The Brinsea wet bulb thermometer is specifically designed for use with the Octagon 20 and 40 and comes with conversion chart showing Relative Humidity.
